WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: The latest information on a startling rise in overdose deaths in the Cincinnati area in the last few weeks. And we’ll talk local politics with Wittenberg Political Science Professor Rob Baker and stories from two of our newest Community Voices producers. See the full details below.

  • A recent spike of heroin related overdose deaths in southwest Ohio has officials across state lines concerned and looking for answers. To get more details on what those possible answers might be, we spoke with Terry DeMio, a reporter on the heroin beat for the Cincinnati inquirer.
  • Rob Baker is a political Science professor at Wittenburg University and recently he penned an op-ed for the Dayton Daily News about some important issues taking place in local governments.  To get the details, we spoke to Rob by phone this week. *Rob Baker’s book Government in the Twilight Zone is available from Suny Press and Amazon.
  • Have you ever wondered what happens in those drab metal buildings clustered together in faded industrial parks? Newly minted Community Voices producer, Jim Kahle*, discovered preperations for the Bonneville Salt Flats races going on in one of those buildings not far off I75, just north of Dayton.
  • Dayton is the home of an annual literary peace prize and has the only peace museum in the country. But Dayton also has a long history of racial tension. This summer newly minted Community Voices producer Michael Kelly visited a new program designed for young people called TIPS: Teens Inventing Peaceful Solutions.
  • WYSO music director, Niki Dakota, stops by to tell us what's in store at this years YSO Community Concert.
