WYSO Weekend: November 30, 2014

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend:

  • The City of Dayton is crafting its 160-million dollar spending plan for next year. WYSO's Ariel Van Cleave recently sat down with City Manager Tim Riordan to talk about the details.
  • WYSO Curious is at it again—that’s our series where you ask the questions and our reporters answer them. This time the question might seem clear-cut: “Who is the Bearded Barber?” The question came from Andrew Grigiss, a former music intern at the station. WYSO’s Lewis Wallace went to Dayton in search of an answer. *WYSO Curious is looking for your questions—what are YOU curious about, about the Miami Valley’s past or future, people or governments? Let us know on w-y-s-o dot org or call the listener line and leave a message at 937-769-1374.
  • When University of Dayton professor Bob Brechaand his wife decided to have a home built awhile back, they were intrigued by the idea of having straw as the key ingredient. Stacks of it, covered by mud plaster. And if that sounds flimsy, possibly cold, listen to his story of the making of a straw-bale house in Yellow Springs. Bob Brecha is a professor of renewable and clean energy program at the University of Dayton. Bob sent us a picture of his straw-bale house and it’s on our website at WYSO.org
  • This fall, WYSO expanded its Community Voices radio production training project to include high school students. Community Voices producer, Basim Blunt, is the instructor for the new project and introduces us to our stories from Dayton Youth Radio:

Jerry began volunteering at WYSO in 1991 and hosting Sunday night's Alpha Rhythms in 1992. He joined the YSO staff in 2007 as Morning Edition Host, then All Things Considered. He's hosted Sunday morning's WYSO Weekend since 2008 and produced several radio dramas and specials . In 2009 Jerry received the Best Feature award from Public Radio News Directors Inc., and was named the 2023 winner of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Best Anchor/News Host award. His current, heart-felt projects include the occasional series Bulletin Board Diaries, which focuses on local, old-school advertisers and small business owners. He has also returned as the co-host Alpha Rhythms.<br/>
