Smoking Ban Goes Before The Supreme Court

The state’s four year old ban on smoking in most indoor places came before the Ohio Supreme Court today. Ohio Public Radio’s Karen Kasler says it’s being framed as a case pitting the rights of private property owners against a popular public health crusade.

Study Shows Smoke-Free Places Are Healthier, Skeptics Doubt It

Smoking in most public places in Ohio has been banned since May of 2007. That’s when a smokefree act approved by voters was put in place. Now, a new study by the Ohio Department of Health’s shows most people like the new statewide smoking ban in most public places. Seventy three percent of Ohio adults surveyed either approve or strongly approve of the new smokefree act. Only nineteen percent disapprove or strongly disapprove.

Board of Education Recommends Strict Smoking Regulations for Schools

The state school board says smoking should be banned not only inside Ohio school buildings but also on surrounding school property.

The Ohio Board of Education voted unanimously in favor of tobacco-free school campuses, including parking lots and athletic facilities. The recommendation approved earlier this month is just that: a recommendation that school systems may adopt or reject. It covers not only smoking but also smokeless tobacco.
