Many will be celebrating America’s independence and the veterans who fought for it this holiday weekend. But some Ohioans might also do something that causes those same veterans a great deal of grief.

According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, one in four women in the military report being sexually assaulted during their service. The numbers are even higher when unreported cases are considered. Life after Military Sexual Trauma, known as MST, can be challenging, but as Veteran Voices reporter and Wright State student veteran Allison Loy discovered, healing can come from finding ways to help others.

Approximately 300,000 Post-9/11 veterans are identified as having post-traumatic stress disorder in this country but it’s estimated that only 1 in 3 asks for help. For those who do, different kinds of therapy can help to manage the after effects of trauma. PTSD In Partners Of Sex Addicts

Combat veterans aren’t the only people to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Research by Dr. Barbara Steffens, of West Chester Ohio, shows a high instance of PTSD in the partners of sex addicts. Community Voices Producer Judy Whelley has more.

PTSD begins with a traumatizing event, often exacerbated by additional trauma. The condition is complicated by the re-experiencing of the trauma when triggered by stimuli associated with the trauma.
