Flint, Michigan's Calcaska Heads to Dayton

It's been a year of ups and downs for Flint Michigan's Calcaska.  After going from a four-piece band to a trio, the members have spent time honing their sound in preparation for a busy year in 2013.  Lead singer Jeff Gingrich spoke with Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt about the band's plans for the future and the evolution of their sound during 2012.

Calcaska will perform on October 12 at Ghostlight Coffee in Dayton.

Miami Valley Music Men Perform on Excursions

The Miami Valley Music Men

The Miami Valley Music Men features 4 quartets and over 35 local men who gather regularly to sing together in traditional barbershop harmonies.  Two of the quartets, Treblemakers and The Daytones, visited the WYSO studios to share some tunes and talk about their upcoming performance: Movie Night, which will feature music performed by the quartets and the larger choral-style group.

The Miami Valley Music Men will perform their annual concert on Saturday, October 13th at the Randy Chisholm Memorial Auditorium on Smithville Road in Dayton.

Dawns Live on Excursions

Hailing from Montana, songwriter David Boone's project Dawns began with a batch of songs sent to a UK producer Danton Supple.  This resulted in Boone traveling to the UK to work with Supple and a host of musicians including a string arranger.  Boone travels with a six-piece band but also performs acoustic.  He visited the WYSO studios for an acoustic performance and spoke about the experience of working on the various incarnations of the Dawns project.

Boone will perform at Ghostlight Coffee on October 9th.

Fred Bartenstein Helps Tell the Story of a Bluegrass Bluesman

Fred Bartenstein has been a bluegrass presence on the WYSO airwaves since the 1980's hosting programs such as Bluegrass Countdown and Banks of the Ohio.  Recently he edited Bluegrass Bluesman: A Memoir, which captures the stories and reflections of Josh Graves, an American musician who born in 1927. 

Bartenstein joins Excursions host Niki Dakota in the WYSO studio to talk about Graves' life and music and the process of compiling material for the book.
