Sen. Sherrod Brown Talks Up Workforce Investment Act At Sinclair

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown visited Sinclair Community College Tuesday to talk about shortages in skilled workers—and talk up his part in amending the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Since 1998, the WIA has funneled billions in federal dollars towards workforce training programs at the state and local levels.

Montgomery County To Hold Forum On The “Talent Pipeline” Tuesday

The Advanced Manufacturing Technology Trade Show in October showcased new technologies driving the manufacturing sector.

Montgomery County will hold a forum on workforce development Tuesday from 5:30pm-7:30pm at Sinclair Community College. Area employers and educators will discuss the need for a “talent pipeline” to address a perceived gap between workforce training for young people and available jobs in a changing market.

Local officials want talented young people to be channeled from school, to internships and apprenticeships, to jobs and careers.

Katie McNeil with Miami Machine Corporation is one of many employers who see a growing skills gap as older workers retire.

Statewide Report on Jobs Stresses Stagnancy

 A report out Sunday says the labor market in Ohio is tough—and not improving as fast as the rest of the country. But some Dayton-area officials have a brighter outlook.

The report, from left-leaning organization Policy Matters Ohio, says jobs, especially well-paying ones, are slow to return to the state. Unemployment has leveled out around 7 percent, but many people continue to leave the labor force completely.

Sinclair Gets $12 Million Job Training Grant

Sinclair Community College is slated to get a nearly $12 million federal grant for the development of job training in information technology.

Sinclair  will receive the funding to lead a consortium to develop the training. The U.S. Department of Labor says the money is part of $500 million in grants announced through a program that promotes skill development and jobs in certain fields through partnerships between employers and training providers.
