One of the six bands that will be at Antistoch: A Benefit for WYSO 91.3fm this Saturday, March 16th is Sport Fishing USA. They are a three-piece band from Yellow Springs, OH. The members are Nathan Moore on guitar and vocals, Brendan Moore on bass and vocals, and David Byrne on drums. Nathan and Brendan are brothers from a family of musicians, including their father, Chris Moore from Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers.

Della Jerkan and Zach Sullivan on Excursions 3/12/13

Today Excursions had Della Jerkan and Zach Sullivan live in the performance studio. Jerkan and Sullivan will be one of six acts that will be performing at Antistoch: a Benefit for WYSO 91.3 FM. The event will take place at The Glen Helen Building located at 405/505 Corry St. in Yellow Springs. All Proceeds from the event will go to support WYSO.

Both Jerkan, from Lansing, Illinois, and Sullivan, from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, have been playing music individually for many years. They began their collaboration after they met at Antioch College where they are first-year students.

In 1976, The Band hosted a farewell tour at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco that featured more than a dozen special guests that inspired The Band and others that were influenced by them including: Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, Bobby Charles, Neil Young, and the Staple Singers. Now in 2013, the famous documentary filmed by Martin Scorsese will be reenacted in its entirety at Gilly's in Dayton.

WYSO was pleased to welcome live into the studio, The Savory Chickens. They will be playing on January 19th at the Springfield Arts Musuem during the opening reception of Outside in Ohio. The event starts at 5:30pm, and The Savory Chickens take the stage at 6:30pm.

The Savory Chickens are mostly a family based band consisting of Ricky Barnes on guitar and vocals, his two children, Henry and Audrey Barnes both on fiddle and vocals, Matt Newman on bass, and Michael Falk on Banjo. Ricky raised his two children on classical and fiddle music from a young age.

The Half Shebang are Kevin Milner and Lindsey Rogers. They are a local Dayton and Cincinnati Ohio based folk/indie band. They performed at Ghostlight Coffee on Friday January 4th at 8pm along with Todd Widener. They have performed three or four times to date including an appearance on Kaleidoscope on WYSO. While on Excursions, they performed some of their songs including "Demons" and "Ireland."

Crazy Joe (a college professor) and Richard Stockton (works with Yellow Springs water) visited the WYSO studios to talk about their band, The Professors which formed ten years ago. They are currently working on a new album. They perform on Saturday, December 15th at Canal Street Tavern in Dayton with Tyrd Fyrgysyn and the Masterxploders.

Their self-titled debut album will be released during their CD release party at Canal Street Tavern on December 7th, 2012. Special guests are Tim Pritchard and the Boxcar Suite and Absinthe Junk from Nashville, TN.

WYSO was pleased to welcome musical guests, The Young Heirlooms and Taylor Alexander, into the studio for their radio debut live on Excursions. The Young Heirlooms are a Cincinnati, OH based band consisting of five musicians, Kyle, Claire, Chris, Kelly, and Benjamin. The group combines guitar, banjo, viola, and standing bass to create a beautiful modern take on folk music. The band is currently recording a full-length, eleven song album with an analog tape recorder.

On this months segment of Thrash About Dayton, music and arts writer for the Dayton Daily News, Don Thrasher, talked about the Xenia, OH based band, The New Old-Fashioned. Their Debut album will be released on December 7th, 2012 at Canal Street Tavern during their CD release party. Special guests will include Tim Pritchard and The Boxcar Suite, and Absinthe Junk from Nasville, TN.

Jerri Stanard, founder of the K-12 Gallery stopped by the WYSO studios to talk about the gallery and art.  The 6,000 sq ft., decorated building is located at 510 E. 3rd St. in Dayton. The school teaches art to children of all ages as well as adults. Stanard also hosts art competitions for different age grounds

Jerri got her start as an art teacher in 1993 when she helped out with a children's art event which saw around 150 people. Now, almost 20 years later, she has taught numerous children of all ages how to create art with different materials.
