Record Store Day 2013: Live Music, Trivia, A Film Screening and Of Course, Vinyl

Music fans around the Miami Valley will flock to several local record stores on Saturday, April 20th to celebrate Record Store Day 2013.  In addition to the special, limited releases, local stores are offering discounts, sales and special events to mark the day.  Ghettoblaster Magazine's Dave Obenour is helping coordinate this year's festivities which include music trivia at Blind Bob's and a special screening of I Need That Record! at the Neon Movies.  Obenour joined Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt in the studio to talk about Record Store Day 2013.

Dear Fawn Live on Kaleidoscope

The cover for Dear Fawn's debut EP, I Played the Queen

What began as Tifani Tanaka and Kyle Melton experimenting with some demo recordings soon turned into a full-fledged band with Melton's King Elk bandmates, Tyler Bellingar and Andy Smith, filling out the remaining instrumentation.  Now Dear Fawn is poised to release its debut EP, I Played the Queen, on Dayton-based Gas Daddy Go Records.  The band visited the WYSO Studios to perform live and talk about finding their sound as a group and the recording process for I Played the Queen.

Henrique Couto Takes on the Slasher With Babysitter Massacre

Filmmaker and musician Henrique Couto departed from the horror genre with his last film, Depression: The Movie, but with Babysitter Massacre, he makes a return to the genre by celebrating the slasher film.  Couto sat down with Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt to talk about making Babysitter Massacre and the early stages of his next project, A Bulldog for Christmas.

Babysitter Massacre premiers Friday, April 12th at 10pm at Englewood Cinema.

Meghna Mahambrey's Evolution of Sound

Meghna Mahambrey's love of music has manifested in different forms over her lifetime.  From her early years singing as much as she could in school to recording with some friends in college to coming into her own as a songwriter and recording her latest album, Kind of Friend.  The recording process lead to the formation of a band, Meghna & the Majority.  Mahambrey and percussionist Aaron Farrier visited the WYSO studios to chat with Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt about the recording process and what's next for the band.

Joy Ike on the Piano and the Creative Process

Joy Ike

Pittsburgh-based singer/songwriter Joy Ike played piano as a child, but after several years away from the instrument found herself returning to music shortly before graduating college.  Ike, who's been widely recognized for being both a skilled songwriter and a percussive pianist, spoke with Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt about her creative process and her latest fan-funded album All or Nothing.

Joy Ike will perform at Dayton's Ghostlight Coffee with Tiffany Thompson on Thursday, April 4th.
