Vick Mickunas created the Book Nook author interview program for WYSO in 1994. Over the years he has produced more than 1300 interviews with writers, musicians, poets, politicians, and celebrities.

He has interviewed historians (Studs Terkel, David McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin), politicians (Mario Cuomo, George McGovern, John Kasich), movie stars (Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Peter Ustinov), astronauts (John Glenn, Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan), diplomats (Richard Holbrooke, Jose Ramos Horta), humorists (Garrison Keillor, Dave Barry, Sarah Vowell), and music legends from bands like The Animals, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones.

Vick has interviewed some of the leading writers of our time, people like Amy Tan, Denise Mina, Pat Conroy, James Lee Burke, Donald Ray Pollock, Ian Rankin, Andre Dubus III,  Joe Hill, Kate Atkinson, and Gary Shteyngart.

Book Nook: Killed at the Whim of a Hat, by Colin Cotterill

Colin Cotterill doesn't like to leave home. You can't blame him, Cotterill lives on the beach in a remote village in Thailand. Cotterill is best known for a mystery series which is set in the 1970's in Laos. The main character, Dr. Siri is a septuagenarian and the first and only coroner in Laos.

Book Nook: Word Freak, by Stefan Fatsis

Ten years ago Stefan Fatsis came to WYSO to talk about his book "Word Freak - Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive SCRABBLE Players."

The book chronicles the author's immersion in a game that can become an obsession for some players. During the course of his research Fatsis became an excellent player.

Book Nook: The Cut, by George Pelecanos

The novelist George Pelecanos has been plugging away writing crime fiction for a number of years. He sets his books in his hometown of Washington, D.C. He just started a new series that features Spero Lucas, a veteran of
the Iraq War who is now working in a somewhat shady occupation: he recovers stolen merchandise.

In "The Cut" Lucas has been hired to recover some stolen shipments of marijuana. Lucas quickly becomes entangled in a nether world of creepy criminals. Lucas just wants his cut. He'll get 40% of the value of any goods he can recover.

Book Nook: Feast Day of Fools, by James Lee Burke

The first time I interviewed James Lee Burke the year was 1997 and he came out to the station to talk about his novel "Cimarron Rose." That book went on to win the Edgar Award for that year.

That interview was the beginning of a wonderful connection with one of America's greatest writers. Burke just published his 30th novel, "Feast Day of Fools."  The author is now 75 years old and while he has slowed down a little bit; he no longer goes out on book tours, his writing gets more powerful with each successive book.
