WYSO Weekend: June 12, 2016

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: Local photographer Dan Patterson remembers his meeting with Muhammad Ali, and a WYSO listener shares his story. We also have Dayton Youth Radio and WYSO’s occasional arts series Culture Couch. Bill Felker has this week’s Poor Will’s Almanack, and we’ll talk politics with long-time political news reporter—WVXU’s Howard Wilkinson. See full details below.

  • The Blue Angels will be absent from this year’s Dayton Air Show. The fan favorites have decided not to perform after a crash last week in Tennessee that took the life of Marine Captain Jeff Kuss, also known as Blue Angel # 6. Roger Doctor is the Public Safety Director for the Dayton airshow. We spoke to him by phone just after the announcement.
  • Memorial services for Muhammad Ali were held Friday in Louisville, Kentucky, and next on WW, local photographer Dan Patterson tells us about his encounter with the boxing legend. You can see Patterson’s 1971 photos of Muhammad Ali in Dayton at WYSO dot org.
  • This week we also asked listeners to share their stories about Ali with us. Here’s Greg Simms Jr. of Dayton. We apologize for the audio but wanted to share the story Simms left on our listener line. He met Ali when he was just a kid.
  • Katherine Kadish is a Yellow Springs painter who’s worked professionally for over 40 years. She’s known for her striking colors, her work is owned by the Library of Congress and the Dayton Art Institute, and she has a commission for the new Dayton Public Library. But Katherine Kadish has been living with an eye disease called Macular Degeneration since she was a teenager and she has very limited eyesight. She recently finished a piece for a client in Dayton and that’s where Community Voices Producer Daniel Gummel picks today's Culture Couch story. *To see some of Katherine Kadish's paintings, visit our website WYSO dot org.
  • The presumptive presidential nominees have now been chosen for both the Republican and Democratic parties. Next in the political pipeline - the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in July. For some analysis on how those conventions may play out, WYSO's Jerry Kenney spoke with Howard Wilkinson, a political news reporter with the Cincinnati Enquirer for more than 30 years. Wilkinson is now with WVXU Public Radio in Cincinnati.
  • Today on Dayton Youth Radio, our first story from teenagers in Springfield. Siblings Dosjine and Odyssee Brown took our youth radio training course at the Springfield Center of Innovation's YOU Media Center. Their story, produced together, is about their relationship growing up as twins and how that relationship could change when they graduate high school. Here’s Project Coordinator, Basim Blunt.
  • Bill Felker with Poor Will's Almanack.
