WYSO Weekend: July 31, 2016

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: Dayton Youth Radio and WYSO’s occasional arts series – Culture Couch. Then, later in the program, we’ll talk with one of the men behind an upcoming noise and experimental music festival. See full program details below.

  • Protests at political conventions are a given. But there were some differences in the voices raised this year. For Ohio Public Radio, WKSU’s M.L. Schultze reports on the contrasts between Cleveland and Philadelphia and between 2016 and years’ past.
  • This week, thousands of people poured into the Ohio State Fair for opening day. That included Gov. John Kasich. As Statehouse correspondent Andy Chow reports, Kasich had his own projects to show off during his annual tour of the fair.

  • Imagine life without mechanics, plumbers or IT help. For working musicians, a damaged instrument or piece of gear could lead to lost gigs, tours or recording sessions. So who do musicians of the Miami Valley call when things go wrong? Community Voices Producer Shelly Hulce introduces us to the world of Dayton musician, restoration and repair man, Chris Wright.

  • If you’ve been a listener to Alpha Rhythms Sunday nights on WYSO over the years you may have at least been exposed to the music of John Cage, Phillip Glass, Steve Reich and even some early Pink Floyd. Those are just some artists who have delved into the world of experimental music and sound. If you’re a fan of the genre, you can get a big fix over two days - August 12th and 13th. The Amplified Humans Festival at the Yellow Cab Building in Dayton will feature artists from Japan and Canada who will join other musicians from across the US and revel in the sounds of noise and experimental music. To get some details on the event, we spoke with organizer Luke Tandy.

  • Today on Dayton Youth Radio, you'll hear the story of a teenager who came to Springfield needing a lot of help. Here's Youth Radio project coordinator Basim Blunt.

  • Bill Felker and Poor Will's Almanack rounds out our program.

Jerry began volunteering at WYSO in 1991 and hosting Sunday night's Alpha Rhythms in 1992. He joined the YSO staff in 2007 as Morning Edition Host, then All Things Considered. He's hosted Sunday morning's WYSO Weekend since 2008 and produced several radio dramas and specials . In 2009 Jerry received the Best Feature award from Public Radio News Directors Inc., and was named the 2023 winner of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Best Anchor/News Host award. His current, heart-felt projects include the occasional series Bulletin Board Diaries, which focuses on local, old-school advertisers and small business owners. He has also returned as the co-host Alpha Rhythms.<br/>
