WYSO Weekend: February 8, 2015

On this week's edition of WYSO Weekend:

  • The state’s task force on community-police relations meets at Central State Monday evening.  Lewis Wallace reports
  • Gov. John Kasich's proposed 72 billion dollar budget includes cuts to more than half of Ohio's public school districts. But as WYSO's Wayne Baker reports, the superintendent of Springfield City Schools thinks the budget will help his district.
  • In other state budget news - A Democratic State Senator who's always supported raising the minimum wage says if Gov. Kasich’s income tax break passes, the plan makes even more sense this time around. Statehouse correspondent Jo Ingles reports.
  • Approximately 300,000 Post-9/11 veterans are identified as having post-traumatic stress disorder in this country but it’s estimated that only 1 in 3 asks for help.  For those who do, different kinds of therapy can help to manage the after effects of trauma. As Veteran Voices reporter and Wright State student veteran Allison Loy has found, many veterans find comfort and support from pets.
  • Protests have been growing in the Miami Valley and around the country in response to police shootings of unarmed black people, many under the hashtag #blacklivesmatter.  Lewis Wallace speaks with two members of a newly formed local Black Lives Matter group about some of their upcoming activities.
  • Today we have a new story from the Dayton Youth Radio project. Last fall, WYSO began teaching radio production skills to high schools students in the media arts program  at Ponitz Career Technology Center in Dayton. In December we heard three student stories – and today we have another. Project manager Basim Blunt introduces us to Logan Walker
  • Mary Morgan was the first woman to run for Dayton City Commission in 1969 and described herself as “an Appalacian migrant, anti-racist feminist”  Morgan died this January at the age of 89, but when StoryCorps came to the Miami Valley in 2010 she and longtime friend Joy Schwab, visited the recording booth to talk about what led her to run for office.  We revisit that interview.
Juliet Fromholt is proud to be music director at 91.3FM WYSO. Juliet began volunteering at WYSO while working at WWSU, the student station at her alma mater, Wright State University. After joining WYSO's staff in 2009, Juliet developed WYSO’s digital and social media strategy until moving into the music director role in 2021. An avid music fan and former record store employee, Juliet continues to host her two music shows, Alpha Rhythms and Kaleidoscope, which features studio performances from local musicians every week. She also co-hosts Attack of the Final Girls, a horror film review podcast.
