WYSO Weekend: August 7, 2016

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: With the start of the Olympics on Friday night, fierce athletic competitions are once again underway. Today we’ll look back at what one athlete was able to accomplished in 1964. You’ll also meet two young men who are running a race of their own—to promote literacy. We’ve got Dayton Youth Radio and WYSO’s April Laissle talks politics later in the program.

  • A new report says immigrant-owned businesses had a $532 million dollar economic impact in Ohio in 2014.  Ohio’s immigrant population growth between 2010 and 2014 was well below the national average but Melissa Bertolo, program coordinator with the city’s Human Relations Council, says immigrants are playing a big role in Ohio’s Economy.
  • Since Former House Speaker John Boehner announced last year his intention to abandon his long-held congressional seat, the race to replace him has been tight. Republican Warren Davidson won the special election to fill the remainder of his term last June. But in November, voters will decide who will fill the seat over the next four years. That race got more complicated last week. WYSO’s April Laissle talked with Cincinnati Enquirer political reporter Jessie Balmert about the new developments.
  • Bob Schul was born in 1937 and raised on his family farm in West Milton.  In 1964, he was a member of the United States Olympic Track Team during the 18th Summer Olympiad in Tokyo. Schul is the only American to win the Olympic Gold Medal in the 5000‐meter race.  Listen to that moment in history, here. His competitive career also included setting four different American race records and a world record in the 2‐mile race. In 1973, he started the cross‐country team at Wright State University where he remained the track coach for over 30 years. He taught in the Dayton Public School system, coached cross‐country at Brookville, Centerville and Wayne, and ran the Bob Schul Racing team.
  • This week on Dayton Youth Radio we have a story from Deonna Parker, a student at Ponitz Career Technology Center, about the double standard she sees between boys and girls around the topic of sex. *Parents of small children may want to know that this story features very frank conversations between teenagers about sex.
  • The Conscious Connect, is a cultural renaissance and street revitalization organization founded in 2015. Their mission is to mobilizes neighborhoods around urban education and literacy.  The two young men behind the non-profit—Moses Mbeseha and Karlos Marshall are eager to fulfill that mission and we were pleased to have them join us in studio to talk about the work they’re doing.
