Wilberforce Continues to Fight Show Cause Order

Wilberforce University is the nation’s oldest, private historically black college and university (HBCU).

Wilberforce University held a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony Friday Jan. 30 for recently renovated buildings. The university continues to repair its facilities and academic programs to fight a show-cause order issued by the Higher Learning Commission.

The HLC issued the show-cause order last June alleging the university was out of compliance in several areas including its academic programs, finances and facilities.

Jeff Sellers, acting vice-president of institutional advancement, says repairing the campus facilities before an HLC visit next week was critical.

"We're cautiously optimistic that the team will be impressed with what they've seen. What we've been able to do in a short amount of time," he said. "And I think most importantly they want to see a reasonable sustainable plan moving forward that will address and continue to address the things we found in the initial show cause report."

Wilberforce presented a 3,000-plus page document to the commission in December detailing plans to fix the problems listed in the show-cause order. The university will learn of the HLC's decision before June.
