What's Great in Dayton: October 3 - 9, 2014

Fall has arrived and downtown Dayton businesses will show off their more colorful sides today during First Friday from 5-10 p.m.

If you want to buy some used books, the Dayton Metro Library are having their Fall Booksale today, tomorrow and Sunday at Hara Arena. Admission and parking are free.

Explore the active side of Dayton with the whole family at Five Rivers MetroParks Midwest Outdoor Experience. This is two days of outdoor adventure today and Saturday at Eastwood MetroPark. Admission and parking are free.

A FREE opportunity to shred your personal documents, old tax information, and confidential papers is at MONCO, on Saturday from 9am - 1pm. This is at 700 Liberty Lane, West Carrollton.

In the early 1900s, Kossuth Colony was a walled company town on the outskirts of North Dayton. Its residents were Hungarian immigrants employed at Barney & Smith Car Company by labor agent Jacob D. Moskowitz. Was Moskowitz a ruthless czar who exploited immigrants, or a benevolent father figure who eased their transition to the new world? On Sunday at 2:00pm at the Dayton Public Library, an expert will be letting us all know about the Kossuth Colony.

Have you ever attended a performance at the Schuster Center or Victoria Theatre and wondered what was happening backstage? Now is your chance to find out! There is a behind the scenes look at the Mead and Victoria Theatres, on Monday from 10am - 11:30.

And finally.....since it is now October you can have a small Oktoberfest celebration with two good guys and me playing our accordions with German tunes. This is Saturday, 4- 6pm at the Fifth Street Brew Pub.

Charlie Campbell wants to spread the news of so many wonderful aspects in the greater Dayton area. He is a cheerleader and a real believer that our area is the place to be. He has been active in this area for almost 40 years and you can hear him weekly at WYSO.
