What's Great in Dayton: October 10 - 16, 2014

The Gem City Ballet begins its 23rd season with two premieres: Autumn Nights by Barbara Pontecorvo and a new work by Gregory Robinson, and two other favorites from their repertory. Come join them for a dance-filled weekend, tonight, Saturday, and Sunday.
 

The 9th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Festival is tonight and this weekend. It showcases the best in LGBT cinema from around the world. Just like you don't have be Jewish to enjoy the Jewish Film Fest and you don't have to be Irish to enjoy St. Patrick's Day, you don't have to be gay to enjoy the great films of this year's Dayton LGBT Film Fest - you just have to have an open mind and heart and enjoy great movies.

Fifth Third Field will host the Walk to End Alzheimer's on Saturday. Check-in for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will start at 10:15 a.m. Each walker may participate in a ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's. One-out-of-three senior citizens dies of Alzheimer's and more than 5 million Americans are living with it.

Down on the Farm Scavenger Hunt and Farm Walk is Saturday, starting at 2:30 p.m. The game is for all ages working in teams or as individuals. Prizes will be given to teams completing the task. This is at The Aullwood Farm.

And finally on Tuesday (The day after Columbus Day) the MID-DAY ARTS CAFE features the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Mahler's Heavenly 4th Symphony. Join Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Artistic Director & Conductor Neal Gittleman and Dayton Performing Arts Alliance President & CEO Paul Helfrich for an insightful discussion of composer Gustav Mahler and his Symphony No. 4.
