Many home and business owners are continuing to dig out one week after six tornadoes swept across the Miami Valley, leaving behind a path of destruction.
The National Weather Service confirmed four tornadoes rated EF0, and two rated EF1, on the evening of May 24, 2017, including a twister that touched down in Clark County along Highway 235 near New Carlisle.
No major injuries were reported, but the tornado outbreak damaged a number of businesses, and a mobile-home park, in the area.
Lisa D’Allessandris, the director of Clark County emergency management, says she’s thankful the damage [in the county] wasn’t more severe.
“It’s a good thing we had mostly insured losses," she says, "that actually expedites the recovery process, rather than uninsured losses and waiting for FEMA.”
Dave Closey is the owner of a Sunoco gas station in Park Layne. The station was destroyed by the storm. He says things have been tough, but he remains optimistic.
“Nobody got hurt. That’s the main thing. It missed my night cashier by eight minutes. I am hoping to rebuild, but I haven’t got a final word yet from the independent appraiser from the insurance company. But it looks like we’re going to be able to,” he says.
Red Cross officials say six people have so far requested assistance in replacing damaged property.
