Springfield To Vote On Levies For Police, Roads and Parks

Voters in Springfield and several other Miami Valley cities will vote Tuesday on levies that would increase income tax levels to cover budget shortfalls.

Springfield has a temporary, five-year earned income tax levy on the ballot known as Issue 2. If passed, the levy would generate an additional $6.5 million a year for the city, and increase tax rates to 2.4 percent.

City officials say the additional revenue would help pay for police, streets and public parks. If the levy fails officials say they'll be forced to cut 10 police officers, close a fire station and reduce funding to the parks and recreation department.

Voters go to the polls on November 8, and early voting is already under way.
