Springfield City Commissioners are expected to vote Tuesday on the city’s 2017 budget. Officials are also expected to announce cuts to police, fire and other services after voters narrowly rejected an income tax boost in November.
The Issue 2 levy that voters failed to pass would have increased city revenues by raising the earned income tax. Now, Springfield commissioners say they’re forced to make budget cuts for next year.
The 2017 budget is expected to include cuts to police, fire and recreation funding.
The vote on service cuts was originally scheduled for December 20th, but in order for the budget to be legally effective on January 1st, a special meeting is scheduled for the 13th.
City manager Jim Bodenmiller has recommended to the commission that the Issue 2 income tax levy be placed before voters again. This time on the May ballot. City officials have until January 3rd to decide whether to put Issue 2 back on the ballot.
