Ohio Heroin Abuse Worse, First-Time Users Younger

Mar 27, 2012

Heroin abuse in Ohio is on the rise, according to a new report by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services.

The report also says that many are switching from more expensive prescription painkillers, and that in some areas, children as young as 13 are starting on the drug.

A separate report released this month by the Ohio Department of Health cited 338 heroin-involved deaths in 2010, or one in every five drug overdose deaths in the state.

The Health Department says a record 1,544 Ohioans died of fatal drug overdoses in 2010.
