Chinese Auto-Glass Company Coming To Moraine Assembly Plant

UPDATE Friday Jan. 10, 11:55 a.m.: Chinese auto-glass firm Fuyao will be the company to purchase over a million square feet of the old GM plant. Find out more here.

Governor John Kasich's office is expected to announce a major new tenant for the former GM assembly plant in Moraine Friday. The tenant, heretofore referred to only by the pseudonym "Project Southbound," would occupy nearly half of the building's 4 million square feet and bring 600-800 jobs associated with a manufacturing operation.

"The work we’ve done has really paid off," said Ohio U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. "There will be real jobs, real manufacturing jobs at Moraine."

On Thursday, the governor's office issued a release stating an announcement will be made in Columbus at 10:45 am Friday about the new tenant.

For the last five years, most of the Moraine assembly plant has stood empty, but economic development workers and politicians succeeded in convincing a major industrial realtor, IRG, to purchase the property in 2011 and begin renting out parts of it. There are now five tenants in the building, but none of them are large enough to serve as anchors.

"The state of Ohio through jobs Ohio, their non-profit arm has really geared up and provided a large level of assistance," said Mike Davis with the City of Moraine.

This past fall, the City of Moraine requested $700,000 in assistance for the project from Montgomery County's ED/GE grant program. The county approved the funding, and the application process put Southbound on the map, but officials have refused to divulge the exact nature of the company in advance of Friday's official announcement.
