Ohio Delegate Says Convention Is More Peaceful Than Anticipated

Ohio's 66 delegates are in Cleveland this week at the Republican National Convention, and some are reporting events have been running more smoothly than anticipated.

Butler County Treasurer and Kasich delegate Nancy Nix had been dreading coming to the convention for weeks. Like many other Kasich delegates, she has some ideological differences with the party’s likely nominee Donald Trump. She also had some security concerns. At one point, she was considering dropping out of the convention all together.

“I thought I was going into a war zone," said Nix. "My husband and I were pretty anxious. Are we going to get home alive?”

But, Nix says, when the convention began yesterday, she was taken aback.

“I feel like I’m in my own neighborhood," said Nix. "It’s beautiful, it’s cleaned up, there are security everywhere, people are friendly. I have not witnessed anything that has made me fearful.”

Nix says despite a protest by delegations from Iowa and Colorado yesterday, the mood inside the convention hall has been calm.

She also said many of Ohio’s delegates are beginning to get behind Trump, even though John Kasich hasn’t endorsed the presumptive presidential nominee.

The governor is set to meet with delegates this week, but has said he will not attend the convention.
