Ohio Bills Would Set New Rules For Disposal Of Aborted Fetal Remains

An Ohio House committee is set to consider possible changes to legislation regulating how abortion providers handle fetal remains.

One bill would require aborted fetuses to be buried, cremated or incinerated. The state's health director would help write the details.

A separate measure would require fetal remains to be buried or cremated, not incinerated. It leaves the decision up to the pregnant woman.

Sponsors of the bills say their proposals seek to clarify Ohio's vague regulations while ensuring the unborn are treated with dignity. However, opponents argue the legislation puts women's privacy at risk because of the publicly available documents Ohio already requires for burial or cremation.

Backers say changes are in the works to address the privacy concern and others.

A House committee will consider the bills on Wednesday.
