Long Time Republican Urges Vote for Redistricting Proposal

The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association is the latest group to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment to change the redistricting process. The organization joins a long list of groups that have joined the Ohio Republican Party in its opposition to the plan.

One long time former Republican state lawmaker and Agency head, Joan Lawrence, is coming out in support of the proposal that she says would allow a board made up of ordinary people, not politicians, to draw the lines for congressional and legislative districts. She says the current system allows politicians to pick their voters instead of the other way around.

"The system is rigged to benefit the party in power and the party in power is struggling to stay in power and it would do that whether it is the Republicans or the Democrats," says Lawrence.

The latest Ohio Newspaper Poll shows 48 percent of Ohioans say they’ll vote against the proposed change for the redistricting process. 25 percent say they’ll vote for it and 27 percent say they aren’t sure how they’ll vote on the issue.
