The Greenon Local School District, a rural district in Clark County, will have two tax issues on the Nov. 4 ballot. School officials believe severe cuts to programs will have to be made if the voters reject the levies.
One of the issues is a renewal of an existing property tax levy that voters approved in 2010.
The second issue asks voters for new money. The 4.96-mill levy would generate over $1.2 million a year for operations for the next five years.
Megan Anthony of the Greenon School District says passage of both levies is critical to prevent further cuts to academic programs.
"Without additional funding Greenon Local School District is facing a deficit in the coming years," Anthony said. "We would have to continue looking at possible cuts for our budget so that we can delay the deficit. Without making cuts if the district were to go into deficit, we would be looking at state oversight."
In May, voters rejected a similar levy request, which caused the district to make over $300,000 in cuts to academic programs.
If approved, the levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $173.60 a year, or $14.47 a month.
This is the only Clark County school district asking for new or additional funds this election cycle. That’s after the Clark -Shawnee school district had a levy rejected in May.
