Dear Mr President,
I hope my apprehension is unwarranted. Many are scared by what you have said in the past. What scares me most is the rhetoric of fear exploited by your campaign, by far the most divisive weapon to be deployed upon the public.
This country was built on the backs of immigrants and slaves and heroes that gave more than their due for the vision of something new -- a nation for all people, a democracy regardless of race or creed, responsible for their own destiny. The only outsiders here are those who do not share these principles.
Unity, the strength of community, is what has and will continue to make America great, and in this American spirit I offer you my greatest hope that your service will be exemplary. In this spirit I would also like to clarify that if these values are breached, if the livelihoods of innocent people are in jeopardy or the rights of citizens threatened, I have no doubt it will soon become clear to you just how loud 63 million people can be.
Once your years in the White House are over, you will go back to a life less-scrutinized and America will move on, but what is left of you -- your legacy -- will be determined by us, decided by the people. It may be a legacy of regret or it could be a legacy of great achievements. That part is up to you.
You are now president of all the people of the United States of America- builders and warriors, mothers and fathers, artists and students who, regardless of leadership will strive forward in the long arc of progress.
In an age defined by our challenges it is vital, and I hope you, Mr President, will be part of it, too.
Sincerely,
Anna Mullin
