Congressional Redistricting Reformists To Meet In Dayton

Ohio's Current Congressional District Map. Efforts are underway to eliminate gerrymandering

Voting rights’ advocates are holding an informational workshop this weekend to update Miami Valley residents about Congressional redistricting-reform efforts. Organizers says the event is about raising awareness. A previous measure to reform Ohio’s redistricting process has stalled in Columbus.

Dayton attorney Ellis Jacobs says some Ohioans have grown frustrated about the lack of progress on the effort. “Now is the time to take it directly to the people," says Jacobs "And see if folks will be willing to vote and make a change and get rid of gerrymandering and give us fairer districts.”

Jacobs says Congressional redistricting is an issue that often goes unnoticed. “The thing about redistricting is that it’s the most boring but most important thing in politics and so you really need to spend some time talking to people about how it works now and how it can improve and how they can get involved in making that change.”

Ellis says organizers may need volunteers to help gather signatures for a potential ballot initiative later this year. The informational workshop will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Dayton East Metro library branch. The event is free and open to the public.
