A lot has changed in the book publishing industry over the last 20 years. When I was hosting this program during the 1990's we had many authors coming through the region on book tours. Publishers would send authors out to promote their books regardless of whether they were well known or completely unknown. Those were different times.
During the summer of 1998 a writer named Emily Colas came through on book tour. She was publicizing her book; "Just Checking: Scenes from the Life of an Obsessive-Compulsive." She came out to the WYSO studios for a live interview. We had a spirited discussion about her book and that seemingly serious subject of OCD. We had fun together that day. Some interviews just really seem to click.
I have drawers filled with cassette tapes from that era. I have not listened to very many of them. Over the intervening years I have had a number of listeners mention this interview and comment about it. They thought it was entertaining and thought provoking. After all these years I finally listened to it and I have to agree with their assessments. You will hear a slight bit of what we call "print through" on this old tape.
This was Emily's first book and as far as I can tell she has not written another one. Yet. I hope you enjoy our conversation from all those years ago.I think this title is still in print. Track down a copy. It is a marvelous read.
We call it the Best of the Book Nook.
The Book Nook on WYSO is made possible by five local library systems in southwest Ohio: the Greene County Public Library, Washington-Centerville Public Library, Clark County Public Library, Dayton Metro Library, and Wright Memorial Public Library.
