The General Election is next week. In Yellow Springs, six candidates are competing for three seats on the Village Council.
Business owner Brian Housh is the lone incumbent on the ballot. The other candidates are business owner Chrissy Cruz, registered nurse Lisa Kreeger, Antioch College IT Director Kevin Stokes, business owner David Turner and Wright State University professor Taki Manolakos.
Yellow Springs News editor Diane Chiddister says police reform, economic development and affordability are among the top issues in the race.
“There’s a lot of anecdotal evidence of people having to leave Yellow Springs," she says, "or not being able to move here who want to move here because of the cost of living here, so there is a lot of concern about how to keep what’s affordable affordable and how to keep affordability from diminishing further.”
Many of the candidates have proposed ideas for ways to attract new businesses to the village.
Also hotly contested is the election to replace longtime outgoing Yellow Springs Mayor David Foubert. Four candidates are vying to replace him: retired teacher Pam Conine, attorney Laura Curliss, retired Wright-Patt employee Gerald Simms and Catherine Price, a pharmacist.
Many of the candidates have spoken about increasing the use of the Yellow Springs’ Mayor’s Court for more misdemeanor offenses.
