Governor Kasich's Thoughts on Teacher Standards and Merit Pay

Governor John Kasich says Ohio must develop standards for teachers and use merit pay as a way to reward teachers who are doing good things. But he says he would really like those policies to come from teachers and education leaders.

"This is not some sort of a political fig leaf or some sort of contrived political operation. We want our teachers to be evaluated. We want it to be fair. We want it to be peer to peer. As far as I'm concerned, I can keep my hands off this thing as long as they deliver a good report. Now I've got a few tweaks here. I am the Governor," says Kasich

Gov. Kasich Set to Name Nonprofit Job-Creation Panel

Governor John Kasich today is expected to announce the line-up of Ohio's new semi-private job creation panel.

JobsOhio will be charged with the economic growth role formerly played by the Ohio Department of Development. Proceeds from state liquor sales are being used as start-up money.

Spokeswoman Bethany McCorkle says a portion of the two-hour meeting will be devoted to Kasich appointing the board's nine members. Then the panel will get to work.

Kasich's jobs creation advisor Mark Kvamme is among those who could be named.

Voters May Decide On Federal Health Care Mandate In November

In this week's edition of PoliticsOhio, Emily McCord speaks to Bill Cohen with the Ohio Public Radio Statehouse News Bureau. Cohen has been following both the referendum effort on Senate Bill 5 and the proposed constitutional amendment Tea Party groups are pushing to exempt Ohioans from the federal mandate in President Obama's health care law. Cohen gives the latest developments with a look to the future and compares the two efforts.
