Officials settle Ohio absentee applications dispute

CLEVELAND (AP) - Ohio's top election official says an agreement has been reached in a dispute with the state's largest county over absentee ballot applications.

Secretary of State Jon Husted said Friday that Cuyahoga County officials have agreed not to send out unsolicited mailings for the 2011 general election.

He says the secretary of state's office agreed to mail absentee ballot request forms to voters in all 88 counties for the 2012 presidential election.

Paige Beller is a local singer songwriter who performs on her own and with indie punk band Jasper the Colossal. Earlier this summer, Beller released a new solo album called Don't You Dare and is already writing songs for the next album. Don't You Dare was recorded with Jason Gilmore (We Were Animals, Ed vs Radio) at his home studio which Beller says gave her a chance to hear her work objectively and allowed her songs to evolve.

Extreme heat and humidity making a return to Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Early September is bringing a return of July's extreme heat to Ohio.

Counties in about two-thirds of the state are under a heat advisory for Friday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service says high temperatures and humidity in western and southern Ohio will make it feel like 100 degrees or warmer.

The forecasters caution that heat stroke, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses are possible, particularly for people who work outdoors or are sensitive to heat.

Ohio Patrol Hopes For A Safe Holiday Weekend

Ohio troopers warn that they hope Labor Day weekend brings a continuation of two trends: more arrests of impaired drivers and fewer crash deaths.

The State Highway Patrol says that officers will be out in full force over the long holiday period keeping roads safe from drivers who've had too much to drink. Col. John Born, the patrol's superintendent, says in a statement that motorists need to make smart decisions, including designating a sober driver.

Study Shows Smoke-Free Places Are Healthier, Skeptics Doubt It

Smoking in most public places in Ohio has been banned since May of 2007. That’s when a smokefree act approved by voters was put in place. Now, a new study by the Ohio Department of Health’s shows most people like the new statewide smoking ban in most public places. Seventy three percent of Ohio adults surveyed either approve or strongly approve of the new smokefree act. Only nineteen percent disapprove or strongly disapprove.
