This afternoon in Springfield the Ohio Department of Transportation will host an open meeting aimed at helping Ohio's publicly owned airports make their dollars go farther. In 2012, the Federal Aviation Association gave nearly $26 million and ODOT provided close to $725,000 in grant to Ohio's 97 public airports.
The state agency says that money didn't address all the needs of those airports.
Springfield's Director of Economic Development, Tom Franzen, feels airports could receive even less funding in the future.
The City of Springfield is planning to sell six acres of land to the German-based company MEVA Formwork Systems for approximately $148,000. The company plans to expand its U.S. operations at its current Clark County Airpark Ohio location, and the expansion will create 15 new jobs in the next three years.
Springfield and MEVA have reached an incentive agreement which states the company will retain 35 jobs and create 15 new ones over the next three years in exchange for approximately $9,500. City officials say the new jobs will pay nearly $42,000 per year.
On Saturday officials gathered in Clark County for a ground-breaking ceremony at the Springfield-Beckley airport. It kicks off an 11.6 million dollar construction project that will benefit the Air National Guard Base housed at the airport.
The project will result in a new administrative building and a training complex for the National Guard. It's being built by Tamsah Marker. The Bellefontaine-based company will also construct a warehouse facility and a parking lot to support the new complex.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is eyeing the Springfield-Beckley Airport as a site for a new runway to be used for training involving the C-17 aircraft.
Base officials say Springfield Airport would be an ideal location to use for C-17 cargo transport training out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The news comes as the base has been looking to cut costs. As of now, the C-17 training missions fly out of state to hold assault training exercises.
