A large donation has been announced for the former South High School, now called the Springfield Center for Innovation.

Musician John Legend has pledged $500,000, and Speedway has pledged another $100,000 to renovate the building’s 700-seat auditorium.

School officials say the donations from Legend and Speedway will be paid over the next two years, and renovations will begin on the auditorium this month. The Springfield City School District owns and operates the building, and the district is matching additional donations up to $1 million for the project.

Clark County is likely to see a boost in employment opportunities over the next five years as Speedway and Dole add jobs.

At a recent job growth conference in Springfield, the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and members of the Dayton Development Coalition pointed to Speedway and Dole's expansion as key factors in Clark County's growth. Speedway is projected to add 350 jobs and Dole expects to add another 150 jobs in the next five years.

Enon-based Speedway announced this morning that it is expanding operations. The company is estimating that the expansion will bring over 300 new jobs to Clark County over a three year period.

Mike McDorman, president of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, indicated that Speedway's expansion plans include buying an office building in Springfield’s NextEdge Applied Research and Technology Park, while also investing $9 million in its current headquarters.

Clark County based Speedway has reached an agreement to purchase Hess Retail Holdings for $2.8 billion dollars. The deal makes Speedway one of the largest convenience store chains in the country.

Hess operates out of New York City and is the largest operator of convenience stores along the East Coast. Speedway's corporate headquarters are in Enon, and the company is a subsidiary of the Marathon Petroleum Company.

Angelia Graves, director of public and state government affairs for Marathon, says the deal is a win-win for both companies.
