School and Business Closings-January 3, 2014

Jan 3, 2014

Bitterly cold temperatures are settling in across the Miami Valley in the wake of a winter storm that left 4-6 inches of snow across the region. Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Clinton, and Butler counties are among the areas in the Miami Valley under a level 1 snow emergency, meaning roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Many school and businesses remain closed or are operating on delays today. From our partners at WHIO:

The entire Miami Valley is under a Winter Weather advisory today, with 2-4 inches of snow accumulation expected. Snow is expected to remain steady throughout the day and taper towards the evening hours. Much colder weather will be behind the snow. Lows tonight will be in the lower single digits. Another system could bring more wintry weather for the weekend. While it's too soon to tell exact amounts, it's likely more snow accumulation is on its way. From our partners at WHIO

Many area schools are on 2-hour delays this morning, as well as some closures, and several problems have been reported on the roadways. A severe storm warning is still in effect through 1 a.m. Saturday. Brian Koniglio with the National Weather Service says storms this big are rare.

"You wouldn’t have a storm like this more than like a couple times a year," he said. "Some years you don’t even have any like this."

It’s already snowed several inches, and Koniglio says snowfall will pick up after sunset.

Another four to six inches of accumulation are expected overnight. Travelers are advised to stay off the roads if possible.
