State Lawmaker From Dayton Dies Unexpectedly

An Ohio state lawmaker who represented southwest Ohio has died unexpectedly during the Legislature's summer recess.

State Rep. Terry Blair, a third-term Republican from Montgomery County, was running for re-election this fall.
 
House Speaker William Batchelder made the announcement about Thursday's death of the 67-year-old Blair, who chaired the House State and Local Government Committee. Batchelder's office said Blair was battling an illness, according to his family.

Brown Announces Bipartisan Amendment to Senate Immigration Bill

Businesses would have to prioritize hiring an American worker over a foreign one, under a bipartisan amendment announced Tuesday by U-S Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio.

Senator Brown says the amendment essentially restores language in the Senate’s immigration bill that requires companies offering positions to recruit AND hire qualified American workers ahead of foreign workers seeking H-1B visas.  The H-1B allows foreign workers with advanced degrees and specialized skills to work in the U.S., on a temporary three-year basis.  Last year, 135-thousand were issued in the country.

Student Voting Bill Pulled From Senate Version of Budget

The plan that would have changed rules for student voting at Ohio’s universities is dead for now.

The plan went like this: If a state funded university gave an out of state student utility credentials to vote as a resident of Ohio, that university would also have to give that student the in-state tuition rate.  It’s a move that could cost state universities more than 300 million dollars.  But Senate President Keith Faber says that proposal has been stripped from the Senate version of the budget.
