The Speaker of the Ohio House has resigned, days after he hired a lawyer and admitted he’d learned  the FBI was asking questions about him.

Speaker Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) announced his resignation at the Tuesday evening meeting of the House Republican caucus. He issued a statement that his actions have been ethical and lawful, but that the inquiry will likely take a long time and there are issues that lawmakers need to attend to.

House Republicans went back to the drawing board to roll out a new budget plan after seeing tax revenues coming up short month after month. The changes include taking out nearly all of Gov. John Kasich’s tax reform proposals and redirecting focus on the drug epidemic.

In his last two budgets Gov. John Kasich has proposed a plan that makes reductions to the income tax, saying he wants to shift the state away from relying on income taxes.

Gov. John Kasich is hitting the campaign trail hard after a second place finish in New Hampshire. Yesterday, Ohio lawmakers talked about how the campaign might be impacting day-to-day operations at the Statehouse.

Recently, there’s been a sense that Kasich's campaign might be causing lawmakers to move a little slower than usual. Senate President Keith Faber (R-Celina) and House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) dispute this notion and say that Kasich is always ready to take a phone call.

As lawmakers talk about changing the process by which groups with economic interests in changing the constitution can bring amendments to voters, one of those groups is planning another amendment that hits back at those legislators.

The ResponsibleOhio amendment would legalize marijuana in Ohio and specify ten growing sites. Senate President Keith Faber and House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, both Republicans, say they want to make it harder for groups to put before voters amendments which have a benefit for them.

The new Ohio House Speaker is announcing appointments to big leadership roles. Republican Rep. Ryan Smith is the newly-selected chairman of what’s considered to be one of the top House committees.

Smith, of southeast Ohio, will serve his second full term in the House as chair of the finance and appropriations committee.

He says he sees himself as a fair and pragmatic leader. Smith and House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger represent a wave of newer elected officials assuming bigger roles in the General Assembly.
