Ohio Historical Society Honors Two Local Communities

Two local communities have been recognized for their work to preserve local landmarks. The Ohio Historical Society has honored Jamestown and Wilberforce for their efforts to rehab and preserve two local landmarks.

Sixteen honorees from 14 communities throughout the state were recognized recently in two categories for their achievement in historic preservation.

A Preservation Merit Award was given to the Jamestown Area Historical Society, the Greene County Commissioners and the Silvercreek Township Trustees for their work  in rehabbing the Jamestown Opera House.

Founding Director of Afro-American Museum Shares His Story

Dr. John Fleming was the founding director of the Afro-American Museum in Wilberforce. The museum opened its doors in 1988. He was saddened to see it close in August of 2011. For awhile the future of it was uncertain, but it re-opened recently thanks in part to funding from the state.

It did not make Fleming happy to see the museum close because of mold problems. And now he feels the museum staff, led by current Director Dr. Charles Wash, needs to think about its future and what it will take to keep it going.

National Afro American Museum still closed due to mold

The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in Wilberforce has been closed since August of 2011 because of a mold problem. The Ohio Historical Society has been working on fixing the issue so the museum can open its doors again.
