Nominations for the 2014 Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, and there are local ties in at least two films up for awards.

Storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson, who worked  with the Cohen Brothers their films Fargo and The Big Lebowski, also worked on the film Inside Llewyn Davis, which is nominated this year for cinematography.

CT VanHoose and DJ Rupert are local filmmakers in the midst of production for Deviant, their latest work.  The film is local effort featuring actors and soundtrack musicians from the Miami Valley.  VanHoose and Rupert visited the WYSO studios along with local musician Scott Lee to talk about the film and its local components, and Lee performed live on the air with members of his new band.

After missing out on the 2013 Kaleidoscope Halloween Special, local horror host Baron Von Porkchop returns to the WYSO studios along with his writer, producer and director Matt Brassfield.  The duo chats with Kaleidsocope host Juliet Fromholt about upcoming episodes of Terrifying Tales of the Macabre and a special 13 hour horror host marathon on DATV on Black Friday.

DATV's Black Friday Horror Host Marathon begins at 6pm on November 29 and features new episodes from Baron Von Porkchop and A. Ghastlee Ghoul plus the TV premiere of The Great Huzzah.

Horrorama is an annual movie marathon for charity at the Englewood Cinema.  This year's event on October 25th features Hammer's The Mummy and George Romero's Dead Trilogy (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead).  Organizers Matt Brassfield and Rick Martin and hosts A. Ghastlee Ghoul and Jeff McClellan joined Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt in the studio for a preview of the festivities.

Horrorama 2013 is Friday, October 25th at Englewood Cinema.  Doors open at 6:30pm.

As the FilmDayton Festival is poised to get underway at the Neon Movies in downtown Dayton, filmmakers Steve Bognar and Farihah Zaman join Niki Dakota in the studio to talk about what this weekend holds.  Zaman, along with Jeff Reichert, made a film called Remote Area Medical which will be screened on Sunday as part of the festival. 

The FilmDayton Festival is August 23-25th in downtown Dayton.

This year marks the 5th anniversary of the FilmDayton Festival, and the first time the festival has opened up submissions for short films from near and far.  FilmDayton Board President Ron Rollins makes a return visit to the WYSO studios to update listeners on the organization, this year's can't-miss films and other workshops and events that are a part of the weekend's festivities.

The Big Lens Film Festival celebrates the work of graduating Wright State University film students.  Graduating senior Megan Hague joins Niki Dakota in the studio to talk about the work she and her classmates are sharing on screen at the Neon Movies.

Filmmaker and musician Henrique Couto departed from the horror genre with his last film, Depression: The Movie, but with Babysitter Massacre, he makes a return to the genre by celebrating the slasher film.  Couto sat down with Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt to talk about making Babysitter Massacre and the early stages of his next project, A Bulldog for Christmas.

Babysitter Massacre premiers Friday, April 12th at 10pm at Englewood Cinema.

Local charity horror movie marathon Horrorama is celebrating its 16th year of bringing spooky sights to the big screen in Dayton, but this year is likely the last year the festival will screen 35mm prints due to the shift to digital projection in movie theaters.  They're celebrating 35mm with 5 amazing films (3 on film and two projected digitally) as well as the usual lineup of costume contests, prizes and other fun.  Two of the three Horrorama organizers, Matt Brassfield and Rick Martin visited the WYSO studios to talk about this year's lineup of films.
