Readiness Summit Readys Kids for Kindergarten

On Tuesday, Education stakeholders around the Miami Valley gathered to talk about how to better prepare youngsters for their first year at school, and as to find ways to help build skills children need to be successful later in life.

Yesterday’s Kindergarten Readiness Summit really grew out of the Common Core State Standards initiative - a state-led effort that establishes educational standards for K through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics. It’s a voluntary program but 45 states have signed on to it so far.

Some Ohio Schools Backing Off Federal Grants

Some Ohio schools have decided that federal Race to the Top education grants aren't worth it.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that some 80 school districts and charter schools across the state have backed out of the grant program after winning money. Some withdrew quickly after deciding requirements were too costly, while others who have been receiving money are starting to pull out.

Schools say new teacher evaluations tied to the grant money add to the costs.

Official Report Cards Finally Released

After a 6 month delay Ohio school officials (today) released school report cards for 2011-2012. The state’s data scrubbing investigation delayed the report cards. The investigation continues to cast a cloud on some grades.

Finally, Ohioans get to see their schools’ ratings in the nice, clean PDF format they’re used to, instead of those confusing and incomplete spreadsheets the Department of Education released in the fall.

Ohio to Flag 'Scrubbing' Districts' Report Cards

Ohio's education chief has informed eight school districts accused of altering attendance data that report cards they've been issued since 2010 will be flagged until a state Education Department investigation is completed.

Acting State Superintendent Michael Sawyers also gave districts where state Auditor Dave Yost found evidence of so-called scrubbing until March 15th to respond to his findings.

Four Advance in Ohio School Superintendent Search

Four candidates have made the final cut in Ohio's search for a new schools chief.

Finalists named Monday include Gov. John Kasich's top education adviser, Richard Ross. The former Reynoldsburg superintendent helped craft Kasich's school-funding plan. Current Interim Superintendent Michael Sawyers is also a finalist.
