Wilmington Readies For Glenn Beck Visit

When Glenn Beck tells the story of Wilmington, it's a town like Bedford Falls, from the holiday movie classic, "It's A Wonderful Life". He's in Wilmington today to showcase, what he calls, a town that gets it', one built on self reliance in the face of economic devastation.

"And this town hasn't taken any money from the government. They don't want any money from the government. They don't want any money. And I ask them why? They say God will provide. If we have faith, he will provide. We don't need it from the government," says Beck on his show.

Chris Schock with the Executive Director of the Clinton County Regional Planning Commission tells the story differently.

GE Announces Plans To Locate Reseach And Development In Dayton

In 2009, Governor Strickland named Dayton as the Ohio Aerospace Hub of Innovation-It was an effort to promote the aerospace research in the area and to create jobs. Now, GE Aviation is partnering with the hub. It's called the Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research and Development, or EPISCENTER. Its focus is on making power systems for hybrid and electric vehicles, electric ships and aircraft and smarter power grids.

Officials at GE Aviation say Dayton is the right place for their new center because of its proximity to Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the University of Dayton Research Institute. Also, the project was helped by a 7.6 million dollar grant by the Ohio Third Frontier Program.

As part of our series What's Working, Emily McCord visits Fairhaven Church for their bimonthly jobseekers group.

Wind Power at the JVS

The Dayton area has lost almost 40,000 manufacturing jobs in the last decade. Across the Miami Valley, people are going back to school to train for that they hope will be a wave of new, green jobs. In Piqua enrollment at the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School has doubled in the last year - in part because of an innovative new program at the school's adult division. It's called Alternative Energy and Green Systems Management, and it's the first program of its kind in the state.

Job and Family Services Adapt

There are some signs that the job market is improving, but longer periods of unemployment mean that many people are replying on support from local agencies. Last fiscal year The Clark County Department of Job and Family Services faced a $3 million deficit and a 10% increase in cases.
