Vick Mickunas created the Book Nook author interview program for WYSO in 1994. Over the years he has produced more than 1300 interviews with writers, musicians, poets, politicians, and celebrities.

He has interviewed historians (Studs Terkel, David McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin), politicians (Mario Cuomo, George McGovern, John Kasich), movie stars (Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Peter Ustinov), astronauts (John Glenn, Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan), diplomats (Richard Holbrooke, Jose Ramos Horta), humorists (Garrison Keillor, Dave Barry, Sarah Vowell), and music legends from bands like The Animals, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones.

Vick has interviewed some of the leading writers of our time, people like Amy Tan, Denise Mina, Pat Conroy, James Lee Burke, Donald Ray Pollock, Ian Rankin, Andre Dubus III,  Joe Hill, Kate Atkinson, and Gary Shteyngart.

Book Nook: Burn Down the Ground, Kambri Crews

Kambri Crews grew up in a rather unusual family. Both of her parents are deaf. Kambri and her brother were granted extraordinary freedoms. Their parents couldn't hear what the kids were up to and Kambri and her brother could hear perfectly well. So they got into lots of mischief.

When Kambri was a young girl the family moved out to the middle of nowhere, a densely wooded Texas acreage. They lived in primitive conditions. Her parents were often on the verge of breaking up.

Andre Dubus III grew up in poverty in a decaying New England mill town.  His parents were divorced when Dubus was young. His family struggled to get by. In "Townie," the author's first memoir, we learn how he was bullied until he decided to fight back. Dubus became a fighter before he ever thought of becoming a writer.

He was a war hero who had fought in the wars against American Indians as the United States continued to surge westward. His campaign slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too" was a salute to his military victories.
