WYSO Weekend: September 29, 2013

University of Dayton

In this edition of WYSO Weekend:

  • Dayton Children’s Hospital and Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County both hosted events Thursday centered around Ohio’s high infant mortality rate.  Ohio has one of the highest rates of infant deaths in the country, and health officials and politicians alike want that to change.
  • In this week’s Politics Ohio, several looming deadlines are at the center of much debate in Washington. On October 1st  Americans without insurance will need to start shopping for healthcare through new exchanges that have been setup.  We’re also moving closer to another budget debate deadline in mid-October. To talk about those debates and where things stand in this fast moving story, we talk with Jack Torry – a reporter with the Columbus Dispatch, whose articles appear in the Dayton Daily News

Joel Pruce is a post-doctoral Fellow in Human Rights studies at the University of Dayton, and the conference Director for the upcoming Social Practice of Human Rights. By all accounts, it’s a global event taking place at UD later this week.  Jerry Kenney spoke with Joel on campus just a few days ago to get details on the conference.

  • First Friday is monthly event during which many downtown Dayton business and galleries host art openings.  On Oct 4th, the Grass Roots Enrichment and Wellness Center in the Oregon District will host an opening for the photography of Jennifer Clarke.  The month-long exhibit features photos of local and regional musicians.  Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt spoke with Clarke about the exhibit and began by asking how she got started photographing musicians.

Jerry began volunteering at WYSO in 1991 and hosting Sunday night's Alpha Rhythms in 1992. He joined the YSO staff in 2007 as Morning Edition Host, then All Things Considered. He's hosted Sunday morning's WYSO Weekend since 2008 and produced several radio dramas and specials . In 2009 Jerry received the Best Feature award from Public Radio News Directors Inc., and was named the 2023 winner of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Best Anchor/News Host award. His current, heart-felt projects include the occasional series Bulletin Board Diaries, which focuses on local, old-school advertisers and small business owners. He has also returned as the co-host Alpha Rhythms.<br/>
