- Last week began introducing you to some of the speakers at this year’s TEDxDayton conference. It happens October 16th at the Victoria Theatre, and so we’d like to give you a small taste of who some of the speaker are and what they plan to talk about. Today you’ll meet Harriet Kamakil-Brown. Harriet works and studies at the University of Dayton. She moved here 10 years ago and attended Sinclair Community College and Wittenberg University. Today she tells us about growing up in Kenya’s largest slum, how she came to Dayton and what she’ll tell TEDx audiences on the 16th.
- 5 million people in the U.S. have ALZ, 210,000 in Ohio. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the nation. It is a disease that still has no cure. No cure. On October 10th some local kids will Rock the Walk for ALZ at 5th Third field in Dayton. Anne Potter is the founder of the camps rock mobile app we told you about earlier this year. She’s the organizer behind Kids Rock the Walk and we talked to her about it this week.
- Thursday Wright State will host the 3rd Annual Image of Hope awards. A program that honors individuals who work with youth in the Miami Valley. Community Voices producer Basim Blunt interviewed Nichole Prichett of Hope Road to learn more about the event. Here’s part of their conversation.
- When renovations to Stivers High School were done in 2009, its historic auditorium was left untouched because of budget constraints. But now the hundred and 1 year old performance space has finally been restored thanks to the Seedling Foundation and the support they received from alumni, friends, and Dayton Public Schools. On Saturday, October 3, it will be the sight of an opening celebration performance. To get details on the renovations and the upcoming performance I spoke with Seedling Foundation President Karen Gagnet. Our conversation took place outside her restaurant—Coco’s Bistro in Dayton.
