WYSO Weekend: October 4, 2015

WYSO Weekend

In this week's edition of WYSO Weekend: Community Voices producer Jocelyn Robinson looks at the uncertain future of Kids HIV Camps, and we’ll hear the lineup of films in this year’s Dayton LGBT Film Festival. Later in the program, Bill Felker with Poor Will’s Miami Valley Almanack.

  • As WYSO reported in June, in Montgomery County heroin overdoses climbed 226 percent from 2010 to 2014.  2015 numbers aren’t out yet but they are expected to be up as well. With those high rates in mind, a Fairborn municipal court judge has started  a new program to tackle the problem. Judge Beth Root spearheaded the new drug court program and we talked to her about how it works.
  • In the mid 1990s, summer camps for kids affected by the AIDS epidemic sprang up all over the country. Today there are about 20 summer camps for kids who are HIV positive or whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. But advances in treatment and prevention mean there are fewer campers now, so these camps have an uncertain future. WYSO Community Voices producer Jocelyn Robinson brings us this story.
  • WYSO Development Director, Luke Dennis joins us to talk about YSO's Warp Drive.
  • On WW, we’ve been introducing you to some of the speakers at this year’s TEDxDayton conference. It happens October 16th at the Victoria Theatre, and so we thought we’d give you a small taste of who some of the speakers are and what they plan to talk about. Today you’ll meet Karin VanZant. Karin is Executive Director of Life Services at CareSource in Dayton and has been charged with building a new division that will transition current Medicaid members off of government subsidies and into a high quality life. Changing quality of life is something Karin has experienced in her own life. Today, she shares her story with us and how it relates to what she’ll talk to TEDx audiences about on the 16th.
  • The Dayton LGBT Film Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and to find out about this year’s selections, we spoke once again with Jonathan McNeil, manager at the Neon Movies in downtown Dayton.
  • Bill Felker has this week's Poor Will's Miami Valley Almanack.
