WYSO Weekend: October 02, 2016

WYSO Weekend

Welcome to Wyso Weekend, the home of WYSO produced news and features. On today’s program, Rediscovered Radio, and Dayton Youth Radio. We’ve got Politics Ohio and Bill Felker with Poor Will’s Almanack.

Up first....

  • Each year, the MacArthur Foundation announces a series of no-strings attached grants to people they believe are “breaking new ground in areas of public concern.” Included in this year’s class of MacArthur Fellows is Miami University’s Daryl Baldwin. Daryl and 22 others will each receive $625,000 to further contributions to their respective fields. We talked with Daryl by phone, to learn about the work he’s doing and where that work is headed.

  • Rediscovered Radio: In the spring of 1965, Antioch College presented a lecture series on “The Shape of Things to Come in America.” Civil rights, avant-garde music, and computers were just a few of the topics. Writer and social critic Susan Sontag was one of the speakers. In the decades after this lecture, her books and essays would come to influence how we think about photographic images, pop culture, and illness. WYSO Archives Fellow Jocelyn Robinson tells us more.
  • Today on Dayton Youth Radio we have a story from Ponitz Career Technology Center about teens having fun.. before it's time to grow up. Project Manager Basim Blunt introduces her story.
  • Politics Ohio:Today, we take another dive into the political pool with Wittenberg University Professor of Political Science, Rob Baker. This week, he talked to us about shifting poll numbers, the continuing republican divide leading up to November’s election and we briefly touched on the challenges facing libertarian and other 3rd party candidates.
  • Bill Felker brings clarity to the living world around us with Poor Will's Almanack.
