WYSO Weekend: May 3, 2015

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: Miami Valley StoryCorps and aviation commentary from Dan Patterson. We’ll hear from one winner of the Tecumseh Land Trust essay contest, and a shout out to WYSO's Joe Colvin – winner of this year’s Carol Baugh Cultural Heritage Award from Sinclair College.  See full details below.

• On Friday, WYSO’s Joe Colvin was awarded the Carol Baugh Cultural Heritage Award, from Sinclair Community College.  The honor is one of a series of recognition awards called the Appalachian Unsung Heroes Awards offered to members of the Miami Valley Appalachian community. Rana Peake is the Appalachian Outreach Coordinator for Sinclair Community College we talked about the program’s mission and why Joe was selected for the award.  And on behalf of all WYSO staff, volunteers and listeners, a big congratulations Joe Colvin for receiving the Carol Baugh Cultural Heritage Award for unspoken heroes. 
• On Miami Valley StoryCorps we bring you conversations between local people who went to the StoryCorps booth in Dayton last spring. Today, we hear Millie Smith interview her mentor, Rhine McLin. McLin is a third generation politician. She was also the first female mayor of Dayton and the first African­American woman elected to the Ohio State Senate.
• Friday, May 8th is recognized as VE Day, which stands for Victory in Europe. 70 years ago, in the spring of 1945, American armies were streaming across Europe – the war was nearly over. Part of the Americans' success came because they had learned how to support the troops and tanks on the ground with support with from the air. Here's Dan Patterson with the story.
• This year WYSO and Tecumseh Land Trust sponsored Living on the Land, an essay contact inviting writers of all ages to reflect on what home and land mean to them.  This week, we hear from Yellow Springs resident Lori Gravley.  Her essay won the grand prize in the adult category and is entitled, "Lying on the Land."
• It’s Springtime and that means home owners across the country are gearing up for landscaping projects – from planting gardens to full scale yard renovations.  If you’re one of the latter and your project includes planting trees. Holly Wiggins is the director of community and corporate social responsibility program with DP&L.  We spoke to her about a new program geared toward helping homeowners with their planting decisions.
