WYSO Weekend: May 18, 2014

In this edition of WYSO Weekend:

  • On Wednesday evening, a severe storm front moving through the Miami Valley produced at least one confirmed tornado touchdown in Cedarville.  Several buildings were demolished and as many as four people had to be extricated from the basement of a home near Barber and Weimer Roads.
  • Today on ReInvention Stories, we meet Jan Underwood from Dayton's Santa Clara neighborhood. It's between Salem Avenue and North Main Street, just north of downtown. Underwood was a photographer at the Dayton Daily News for many years until changes in newspaper publishing, and in her personal life, forced her to reinvent herself. Julia Reichert produced this story. Her film about Jan Underwood's reinvention is on our website, wyso dot org.
  • Major funding for the second season of ReInvention Stories comes from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation with support from Wright State University CELIA fund, the Yellow Springs Community Foundation and Antioch College.
  • In the spring of 1970, college campuses across the nation erupted in protests, mainly against the escalation of the war in Vietnam. We remember May 4th, the day Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on demonstrators at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine. Only ten days later, another campus shooting left two dead and a dozen injured at a historically black college in Mississippi, but that event is not part of our collective consciousness. Rediscovered Radio’s Jocelyn Robinson found archival tape of interviews recorded within hours of the tragedy that took place 44 years ago this past week.
  • “Call and Response” is a new feature on WYSO Weekend that spotlights ideas and conversation from our regions African American and Hispanic populations. This is the premiere broadcast with our host, Dr, Daryl Ward. Listen, call and respond with your comments and feedback at 937-769-1374 or email wyso@wyso.org.
