In this edition of WYSO Weekend: WYSO welcomes back to the Antioch campus, hundreds of alumni for reunion weekend, and many YSO alumni have returned to celebrate the opening of the WYSO Digital Archives. We also have Miami Valley StoryCorps, and Dayton Youth Radio.
- One voice from YSO’s past belongs to Jay Tuck. He’s an American journalist and film producer based in Hamburg, Germany. He’s had a long career as a reporter, war correspondent and editorial director, and produced more than 600 documentaries and news segments for network television. That distinguished media career began at WYSO. Jay Tuck graduated from Antioch College in 1968. This weekend WYSO has also been celebrating the return of many YSO alumni to the station, to visit the newly opened WYSO Digital Archives and share their memories of the station.
- This weekend marked Antioch College's first commencement ceremony since closing and then reopening four years ago. Included in the days-long celebrations during reunion weekend—were major work projects taken on by Antioch alums. The Antioch Volunteer Work Project was started in 1986. But in 2008, the school’s closing brought alumni in droves—they wanted to get the school back up running. Now more than ever, the campus is dependent on alumni's help to rebuild...the labor they provide as much as four times a year is valued at over 100 thousand dollars. It’s not all work. There’s some fun involved too. The volunteers in town this week worked on the Antioch farm, the kitchen, and did repairs and construction. - On Miami Valley StoryCorps we bring you conversations between local people who went to the StoryCorps booth in Dayton last spring. Today, we meet Jessie Gooding and Dr. Junior Greenlee. These lifelong friends have spent many years as community organizers in Dayton and came to the StoryCorps booth to reflect on their friendship and the African American experience in Dayton past and present.
- This weeks Dayton Youth Radio story is from Fatema Ahmed. A teenager who was born in Iraq and now goes to high school at DECA, the Dayton Early College Academy. Youth Radio Project Manager Basim Blunt introduces our story.
