WYSO Weekend: June 18, 2017

WYSO Weekend

Welcome to WYSO Weekend, our weekly radio magazine!  This week, we’ve got a series of stories on how some teachers will be spending their summer vacations - learning how to use firearms in active shooter situations. Later in the program, you'll hear WYSO’s occasional arts series Culture Couch with our very own, Luke Dennis, and Bill Felker has this week’s Poor WIll’s Almanack. See full details below.

  • Last week we brought you the first segment of a series from West Virginia Public Broadcasting called The Struggle to Stay. The series looks at plight of many young people across the country who are leaving rural communities and heading to cities in search of opportunity. On today's program, we continue the story of military veteran Mark Combs as he leaves his home in Morgantown, West Virginia. Reporter Glynis Board follows Combs as he heads west in search of a brighter future.
  • Most schools are now closed but some Ohio teachers will be spending part of their summer break training for next fall.  They’re preparing in the event of an active shooter in their schools. But this isn’t the Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, & Evacuate (ALICE) training where educators are taught to barricade doors or counter a shooter with distractions.  This training is for teachers and other school employees who will be licensed to carry a firearm. Today we bring you this story in two parts - first, Idea Streams Annie Wu takes us to one school district, south of Akron, where a pro-gun organization has funded force-on-force training. These stories do contain the sound of gunfire and may not be suitable for all listeners.
  • Ohio state law prohibits firearms inside school buildings, but school boards have the right to give individuals permission to conceal carry.  In part two of this story, Wu takes us to a Faculty/Administrator Safety Training and Emergency Response or FASTER training camp, where educators prepare in case of an active shooter.  We join them on the third and last day of training where participants go through an active shooter simulation.  Again, this story contains the sound of gunfire and may not be suitable for all listeners.
  • Today the world of the circus, circa 1903 – with its awe-inspiring physical feats, goofy comedy and over-the-top showmanship – will descend upon Dayton for two final performances at the Schuster Center. And the actor playing the ringmaster, Willy Whipsnade? It’s magician David Williamson from Xenia, Ohio. For Culture Couch, our series on creativity and the arts in the Miami Valley, Community Voices producer Luke Dennis shares his story.
  • Bill Felker has this week's Poor Will's Almanack.
