WYSO Weekend: July 5, 2015

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: Community Voices and Dayton Youth Radio.  We’ll also talk to the developer of a new smart phone app that helps lost pets get back to their owners.  Then we'll talk with Montgomery County Animal Resource Center to learn more about the stray pet population here at home. • Abortion clinics in Dayton and Toledo might be forced to close by tightening state regulations. As WYSO’s Lewis Wallace reports, new provisions in the governor’s budget could make it harder for abortion providers to stay open.
• Back in 2004, a majority of voters in all but one county in Ohio passed a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. But some were far more adamant than others. In largely rural, heavily Amish Holmes County, the amendment passed by better than three-to-one – one of the widest margins in the state. For Ohio Public Radio, WKSU’s M.L. Schultze visited the county to see how last week’s Supreme Court decision is playing out.
• Peter and Gudrun Seifert are a Middletown couple who have hiked the length of the Alps. Their journey took them to France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. But to train for hiking, they stayed close to home using Five Rivers MetroParks. Community Voices producer Debra Oswald has the story.
• This week on Dayton Youth Radio we'll hear a story from Dayton Early College Academy student Jessye Beck­Stone about growing up in a blended family.
• There’s a new app that can help lost pets get back to their owners.  It uses facial recognition software to match photographs uploaded to a database. The app’s creator, John Polimeno was in town this week to announce that the app was now being used by the Montgomery County Animal Resource Shelter.  Coming up we’ll talk with an ARC official about some surprising stats on Stray animals in the area, but first, a conversation with the creator of the app Finding Rover.
• The Montgomery County Animal Resource Shelter is the first in Ohio to use the app called Finding Rover.  We wanted to find out how it will help them and also find out about the local stray animal population.  ARC’s Director Mark Kumpf provided the answers.
